katamari democracy

Maya Lin, of Vietnam Memorial fame (at 21!), has some new work in NYC. 



other than being lovely, i couldn't help but notice the resemblance between her new balls o funk & the fantastic Katamari Damarcy ps2 game.





Also worthy of mention here is Sheldon Brown's Scalable City - a 4k version of Katamari but with generative levels, a trackball, and a million little details that make it worthy of seeking out.

Face Invaders

This stunt is up & running in this year's FILE in Sao Paulo. 


note you need a webcam for it to work.

it's a web-based version of a larger install; the sketch is there, but there are details that are too much for flash... the facial expression recognition slows things down to a sixth of the speed... also note it's only 320x240... on linux i can do 800x600 at 60 fps, but in browser on decent machine i get about 15 fps w/ 320x240, and about 2-5 fps w/ 640x480.

the real magic is someone porting the haars stuff from opencv to flash. 

maniac !


i'd like to trick this out more & install a few other places.

so i stopped by andrew's gallery to finally pick up some posters he patiently held onto for weeks after the show they're for, closed...


and i find out the most amusing thing - more amusing than cody's last show title, and more amusing than any of the titles of the works, is the fact that the Federal Reserve Bank just bought one called, wait for it:



"Your souls will burn in the pits of hell".

i paraphrase, but only slightly. 

it's very pretty, it looks something like the one above - which is what the title of this post also paraphrases.

but again, only slightly.

The fact that the local branch of the fed is acquiring it in this economy is beyond amusing.

wouldn't it be cool if the US would stop accepting the billion dollars or so a day that china invests in us, refusing to trade until it gives up it's wait-until-he-dies approach to tibet ???


yeah, real cool. meanwhile the source of our enligtened ideals & constitution are actually living up to their ideals.

the late French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent's 200m+ art collection is being auctioned off and proceeds donated to medical research. 

as if that's not noble enough - two of the artifacts are from a raiding of a Beijing Palace in the 2nd Opium War in 1860. China wants them back, but France will only give it up if they, well, free Tibet.

"Interest in the case went beyond the art world because of tensions between Paris and Beijing over French President Nicolas Sarkozy's decision to meet the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, whom Beijing considers a separatist.

Berge had offered to hand over the sculptures, valued at 8-10 million euros each, if China agreed to guarantee human rights and allow the Dalai Lama back into Tibet. The Dalai Lama says he only wants greater autonomy for the region."
